Historic Environment Scotland (HES) is seeking candidates for a Paralegal role within our Finance & Corporate Services Directorate.

Job Description

Fixed Term Contract for 2 Years

About the role

You’ll join our Legal Team, working alongside the Head of Legal, solicitors, and the Legal & Insurance Business Partner to support legal and insurance operations across HES.

In this varied and fast-paced role, you’ll:

  • Support legal casework through research, drafting and document preparation
  • Help manage insurance claims, including coordinating evidence and maintaining records
  • Act as a first point of contact for legal queries, triaging and managing requests
  • Maintain legal systems, workflows, and registers (including contract and insurance records)
  • Manage the team inbox and ensure timely progression of actions
  • Support continuous improvement of legal templates, processes, and systems
  • Assist with administrative and financial processes such as invoices and purchase orders

You’ll play a key role in ensuring the Legal Team delivers accurate, efficient and professional support across the organisation.

About you

You will be required to demonstrate that you meet the requirements and qualifications below as part of the selection process. 

Essential requirements:

  • Qualified to at least SCQF level 7 in legal services or a related subject 
  • Experience of working in a legal environment or relevant legal studies (e.g. in-house, private practice) 
  • Strong IT skills, including MS Office 365 (SharePoint, Teams, Word, Excel, Visio, Adobe Acrobat/Sign, Outlook) 
  • Demonstrable experience of drafting, formatting and maintaining complex legal documents and templates 
  • Sound understanding of basic legal concepts 
  • Strong organisational skills, including the ability to prioritise workload, manage legal workflows and meet tight deadlines in a fast-paced environment 
  • Excellent communication and analytical skills 
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail 
  • Ability to handle confidential and sensitive information with discretion 
  • Ability to build and maintain effective working relationships
