Job Description

A leading Disputes team is seeking an Associate / Senior Associate (6 years'+) to join its specialist Shipping & Transport practice, based in Edinburgh.

This is a standout opportunity to build a reputation in a niche, internationally-facing sector, working on complex and high-value matters across the marine, energy and transport industries. The role offers real variety, combining contentious work with opportunities to develop advisory and transactional experience.

The Role

You’ll work with a broad, global client base including insurers, P&I Clubs, ports, vessel operators and offshore energy companies. Responsibilities include:

  • Handling commercial and insurance disputes across the shipping and transport sector
  • Managing personal injury defence and claims involving operators, owners and ports
  • Advising on incidents, investigations and regulatory matters
  • Supporting marine, health & safety and wider advisory work
  • Gaining exposure to transactional matters such as ship sale & purchase and chartering
  • Advocacy in the Sheriff Court and involvement in more complex proceedings

This role may also involve attending client sites following incidents and supporting regulatory investigations.

About You

  • Have 6+ years’ PQE in disputes (sector experience helpful, not essential)
  • Are commercially aware, pragmatic and solutions-focused
  • Communicate clearly and build strong client relationships
  • Thrive in a fast-paced, responsive environment
  • Are interested in developing specialist expertise in shipping and transport

Scottish qualification is preferred, but England & Wales qualified candidates with relevant experience are encouraged to apply.

The Offer

  • High-quality, high-value and often international work
  • Clear progression and long-term career development
  • Strong mentoring and structured training
  • Opportunity to build a specialist profile in a growing sector
