About Postcode Lottery Group

Postcode Lottery Group is an international organisation driven by a social purpose, which combines business with ideals. We establish and operate charity lotteries, raising as many funds as possible to support those working to build a healthier, fairer and greener world – from local grassroots charities to large international NGOs.

We turn every home’s postcode into a ticket for good. Neighbours provide vital funds for good causes by playing, winning and celebrating together. In fact, since the first Postcode Lottery was launched in the Netherlands in 1989, more than €15.5 billion has been raised for thousands of charities and local initiatives worldwide.

Today, there are Postcode Lotteries in the Netherlands, Sweden, the United Kingdom, Germany and Norway, with plans to launch in Canada later this year. Across these markets, the successful Postcode Lottery format combines entertainment with charitable giving, creating a unique model of community-based fundraising which is both safe and sustainable.

Postcode Lottery Group is steward-owned by a not-for-profit foundation headquartered in Amsterdam. We also have teams in Düsseldorf, Edinburgh, London, Oslo and Stockholm. Our success is measured not by profit, but by the level of funding generated by our players for charity partners.

The culture is collaborative, informal, fast-paced and purpose-driven, with a strong emphasis on innovation and continuous improvement. Teams are encouraged to challenge thinking, bring forward new ideas, and contribute to building an inclusive and high-performing organisation.

About your department

The Legal and Licence team advise on matters such as compliance, data protection and legal issues (including contracts). Our role is vital to the sustainable growth of Postcode Lottery UK as it is only through everyone working together to secure compliance with regulatory obligations that such growth can occur, protecting and increasing funding for good causes.

"Being a trainee at the Postcode Lottery was an exciting and varied experience. My role involved reviewing and negotiating commercial contracts, advising on data protection and a broad range of legal matters, as well as assisting with the assessment of deceased player payouts. No two days were the same, and I enjoyed the variety and responsibility that came with the role.

Alongside my legal work, I had the opportunity to assess charity funding applications and meet some of the charities supported by Postcode Lottery. Seeing first-hand the impact of the funding provided valuable insight into the organisation's purpose and made the role particularly rewarding."

About the role

This is a unique opportunity to complete your two-year traineeship with Postcode Lottery. Rather than following the traditional four-seat rotation, you will gain broad, hands-on experience across a wide range of legal, regulatory and governance matters. Working closely with teams across the business, you will develop a comprehensive understanding of the role of an in-house legal team within a highly regulated organisation.

You will join our Legal and Licence Team, supporting the Head of Legal together with our Privacy and Commercial Solicitors. You will also work alongside our Compliance Manager, helping to ensure that Postcode Lottery complies with the Gambling Act 2005, the Licence Conditions and Codes of Practice (LCCP) and other applicable legislation.

In addition to your work within Legal and Licence, you will have the opportunity to support our Charities Team on charity governance matters, giving you exposure to another specialist area of practice.

We appreciate that as an External Lottery Manager, we deal with legal matters that you will not have come across in your degree or during your diploma.  We are not looking for an expert; we are looking for someone who is keen to learn and fits in with the ethos of our company and our team.

The Power of Postcodes

The Postcode Lottery Group is an international organisation driven by a social purpose, combining business with ideals. Our purpose is to set up and operate charity lotteries globally, raising as much funding as possible to support initiatives working for a healthier, fairer, greener world.

It is our aim to attract as many players as possible, spreading joy with entertainment and exciting prizes. Our players win prizes together with their neighbours and raise money for charity together – it’s a win-win!

Part of every ticket price goes directly to charities, meaning every single player is contributing to positive change. This is how we turn a postcode into a ticket for good - a concept we call the Power of Postcodes.
