Job Description

It is an exciting time to join the Law Society of Scotland. We have two opportunities within the Regulation team for Regulation Solicitors, supporting the Society as we implement significant changes arising from the Regulation of Legal Services (Scotland) Act 2025.

Both roles will provide high-quality legal, regulatory, policy and governance support and offer the opportunity to help develop regulatory frameworks, policies and processes that are clear, proportionate and workable in practice. The roles have different areas of focus, with one concentrating on authorised legal businesses and licensed legal services providers, and the other on the implementation and ongoing operation of the new complaints provisions.

At the centre of our organisation are the values of Respect, Openness, Progress, Inclusion, and Integrity which drive our teams to deliver the best possible service for the legal sector and beyond.

The opportunities:

Solicitor – Authorised Legal Businesses and Licensed Legal Services Providers

This role will support the development, implementation and operation of the regulatory frameworks for authorised legal businesses and licensed legal services providers, including rules, guidance, policies and regulatory processes. You will also act as Secretary to the Rules, Waivers and Guidance Sub-Committee and act as Information Governance Champion for the Regulatory Compliance team.

Solicitor – Complaints

This role will support implementation of the new complaints provisions under the Regulation of Legal Services (Scotland) Act 2025, helping to develop the policies, rules, processes, guidance and operational arrangements required to put the new provisions into practice. As implementation progresses, the role will transition into the Professional Conduct Team, supporting the ongoing delivery and development of the Society's complaints-related regulatory functions.

Key Responsibilities for these roles

  • Provide high-quality legal and regulatory analysis and advice, including interpreting legislation and regulatory requirements and translating these into practical policies, processes and guidance.
  • Support the development and implementation of regulatory frameworks arising from the Regulation of Legal Services (Scotland) Act 2025, with a particular focus on either the ALB and licensed provider regimes or the new complaints provisions.
  • Prepare clear, concise and well-reasoned papers, briefings, recommendations and other documentation to support effective regulatory and governance decision-making.
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues, committees, senior leaders, professional advisers and external stakeholders to support effective and proportionate regulatory delivery.
  • Contribute to the development and continuous improvement of regulatory processes, guidance and operational arrangements, as well as supporting knowledge sharing and training.

Key Knowledge, Skills and Experience:

  • Qualified solicitor with an unrestricted practising certificate in a UK jurisdiction.
  • Demonstrable post-qualifying legal experience, preferably gained in a regulatory, public law, governance, professional discipline, complaints, compliance or policy environment.
  • Strong experience of interpreting and applying legislation, rules, policies or regulatory requirements.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with sound professional judgement.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain complex legal or regulatory issues clearly and concisely.
