We have been exclusively instructed by our client, a Scottish Public Inquiry, to recruit two experienced Assistant Solicitors to join the Inquiry legal team.

Job Description

This is a unique opportunity to gain Public Inquiry experience on a 23-month fixed-term contract. The role is based in central Edinburgh, with office attendance required at least three days per week.

Main responsibilities include identifying and recovering evidence; engaging with external stakeholders; assisting Counsel with review, analysis, and relevance to the Terms of Reference, including contributing to summaries and thematic reports; overseeing applicant statements and expert reports for the Independent Clinical Review; using evidence to identify further inquiries, witnesses, and issues; managing redaction and disclosure in line with Inquiry policies; liaising with Counsel and solicitors and providing legal advice as required; assisting with witness statements for represented and unrepresented witnesses; drafting Rule 8 requests, Section 21 notices, and warning letters; supporting the identification and instruction of expert witnesses; conducting legal research as requested; ensuring compliance with Inquiry procedures and GDPR; and preparing for hearings, including providing practical and legal assistance during sessions, producing summaries, and updating thematic reports.

Applicants should have at least five years’ PQE and hold a current Practising Certificate. A background in litigation or large-scale project work is required, with medical negligence experience preferred. Previous public inquiry experience would be advantageous but is not essential.

The role requires strong attention to detail, excellent interpersonal skills, and flexibility, as workloads may increase during hearing preparation. If this role could be of interest, please don’t hesitate to contact Cameron or Steph for a confidential discussion. (Assignment 18035)
