Job Description

The Law Society of Scotland is seeking an experienced and strategic leader to take on the role of Head of Conduct and Standards. This is a significant opportunity to lead a critical regulatory function, ensuring high standards of professional conduct across the Scottish legal profession and helping to protect the public interest.

The Law Society of Scotland is the professional body and regulator for over 13,000 Scottish solicitors. As a world-class professional body, we regulate in the public interest, support our members, and promote legal excellence. The Head of Conduct and Standards will play a central role in upholding confidence in the profession by leading the Society’s approach to conduct complaints, investigations and disciplinary proceedings.

Working closely with the Executive Director of Regulation and as part of the Regulation Directorate’s senior management team, the Head of Conduct and Standards will lead the Professional Conduct Team, ensuring that complaints and disciplinary processes are managed efficiently, fairly and in line with best regulatory practice. The role will be pivotal in delivering regulatory transformation, including implementation of reforms arising from the Regulation of Legal Services (Scotland) Act 2025, while driving robust decision-making, timely resolution, appropriate enforcement of sanctions, and continuous improvement in complaints handling and operational performance in support of the Society’s wider strategic objectives.

This role requires strong leadership and the ability to manage complex, high-profile and sensitive issues. The successful candidate will bring experience of operating within a regulatory or similarly complex environment, with a proven track record of leading teams, managing change and delivering performance improvement, alongside the ability to build effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including regulatory bodies, committees and government. As a senior leader, the postholder will demonstrate sound judgement, resilience and a commitment to continuous improvement, and will be comfortable working in a fast-paced environment with significant external scrutiny while maintaining high standards of quality, integrity and professionalism.

The successful candidate will embody the Society’s core values of Respect, Openness, Progress, Inclusion and Integrity, helping to foster a culture of excellence and accountability while supporting the evolution of a modern and effective regulatory framework.
