Education Policy Executive, Permanent, £37,259pa, (35 hours per week)
It is an exciting time to join the Law Society of Scotland. Due to organisational growth we have an opportunity within the Education, Training and Qualifications directorate for an Education Policy Executive who has a high level of drive and enthusiasm and who is passionate about social mobility. The role offers variety and involves working with the Head of Education to develop education policies relating to a range of workstreams as well as leading the Careers and Outreach team’s work in development of policy relating to schools outreach and leading a recently re-established Social Mobility Network.
The Education and Training Directorate has a varied remit including:
- Setting and monitoring the standards for qualification as a Scottish solicitor;
- Schools outreach including a focus on social mobility;
- Engagement with law students and trainees;
- Solicitor advocate qualifications; and
- Development and delivery of the Law Society’s equality, diversity and inclusion initiatives.

Key Responsibilities for this role:
- Working with the Head of Education to develop education policy relating to alternative routes to qualifying as a solicitor; knowledge and skills outcomes required to qualify as a solicitor in Scotland with particular emphasis on trauma-informed practice and legal technology; requalification into Scotland from other jurisdictions; and development of education policy through a range of projects arising from time to time
- Leading the newly re-established Social Mobility Network
- Researching and developing policy relating to schools outreach
- Managing the licensing process for providers of Trainee Continuing Professional Development
- Reviewing, developing and designing themes for the Law Society Summer School for school pupils
- Engaging stakeholders and managing areas of educational policy for aspiring lawyers to develop our research and areas of focus
Key Knowledge, Skills and Experience:
- Experience of policy development, social mobility initiatives, and managing simultaneous large-scale projects with successful outcomes. Experience of working in the legal sector is desirable, although not essential.
- An understanding of legal education in Scotland
- High level research skills
- Influencing and negotiating skills
- Working collaboratively as part of a team

- Ability to work flexibly to meet deadlines

Some travel within Scotland will be necessary and occasional out of hours and weekend work may be necessary.
