Job Description


To undertake training over a period of two years in at least three areas of law covering both contentious and non-contentious work. As a trainee solicitor carry out key legal tasks so as to provide guidance and recommendations to enable business decision making and support the Group in fulfilling its business aims in connection with product development and proposition requirements, commercial matters, disputes and company secretarial work. Over the two years the trainee solicitor will build on their knowledge and experience and in the second year they will be expected to work with greater autonomy and on more complex legal matters.

Job Description

This is an exciting opportunity for a 2 year fixed contract for a trainee solicitor in the UK head office legal and company secretariat department. We are looking for the right person to start in September 2022 and so it is essential that you have already completed your Diploma in legal Practice.

As a trainee solicitor you will have the opportunity to gain valuable development following an established training programme with at least three of the teams in the legal and company secretariat department. The work will cover both contentious and non-contentious legal matters and you will play a key role in supporting the department to deliver critical business projects.

As a member of the legal team, you will be resilient and collaborative in your approach to work with the ability to identify the relevant law and able to apply legal research to business specific requirements. 

Essential criteria

  • Bachelor of Laws – LLB Scots Law
  • Diploma in legal Practice
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills 
  • Strong analytical skills and attention to detail
  • Good IT skills - Experience of Microsoft Office desirable
  • Must comply with the training requirements under the terms and conditions of the Law Society of Scotland’s training contract

Desirable Criteria

  • Experience within the Financial Services industry and knowledge of life and pensions industry whilst preferred, is not essential.
  • Experience of working within an in-house legal team or in private practice whilst preferred, is not essential.

Additional Job Description

  • Draft and review legal documents including court documents, commercial contracts, product terms and conditions ensuring that they are accurate and of an appropriate standard
  • Assess legal problems and produce written legal advice within deadlines specified
  • Conduct legal research so as to be able to advise the business
  • Assist with internal governance issues and processes
  • Work with members of the department to answer mailbox legal and technical queries
  • Keep up to date with developments in the law and practice to ensure standard of work is not compromised
  • Develop and maintain good client relation skills with the wider business
  • Comply with the training requirements under the terms and conditions of the Law Society of Scotland’s training contract
