We have an opportunity for a Solicitor to join the utilities, transport and compulsory purchase team within the Real Estate department in Edinburgh.

The cross departmental transport practice is top ranked by the independent legal directories, Chambers & Partners and The Legal 500, and the transport and compulsory purchase team within Real Estate has unrivalled experience and expertise in delivering major transport and infrastructure projects, including the three new railways in Scotland.

This role will involve working in a supportive team structure to provide legal advice and support in dealing with utilities work and on the transport and compulsory purchase projects carried out by our dedicated projects team


• Negotiating and completing wayleave agreements, deeds of servitudes, leases and related contracts for utilities transactions, including giving advice on related compensation claims

• Land referencing, including title investigations and site visits, to identify ownership and other interests in land that are, or may be, required for major transport and infrastructure projects

• Examining and reporting on title and providing property support to project teams

• Dealing with land assembly and title registrations

• Assisting on all aspects of compulsory purchase law and procedure

• Managing routine compensation claims and assisting senior team members with more complex claims

• Liaising with clients and project partners; dealing with day-to-day queries and instructions; and co-ordinating responses to more complex queries requiring input from different departments

• Involvement in business development activities linked to the team’s, the department’s and the firm’s strategic plan

• Be aware of information security policies, and protect information assets from unauthorised access, disclosure, modification, destruction or interference at all times


• Previous experience of working in property is essential. Previous experience of working with Sasine titles and/or in large scale title assembly would be an advantage

• Genuine interest and enthusiasm for property law and conveyancing

• Interest and enthusiasm for CPO, utilities and transport work

• Strong research skills

• Demonstrates understanding of clients’ needs, and tailors advice appropriately

• Strong communication skills including oral and written

• Excellent attention to detail

• Excellent organisational skills and the ability to juggle multiple priorities

• Can demonstrate experience of working successfully in a challenging environment

• An ability to build relationships at all levels

• Adopts a flexible and proactive approach to work duties

• Organises and prioritises time effectively to achieve deadlines
