The scope of our responsibilities is extremely broad; including problem-solving, environmental improvement, addressing climate change, sampling and monitoring, reporting on the state of our environment, advising on environmental issues, protecting citizens and communities from environmental harms, publishing environmental data and information, raising environmental awareness, preparing for future environmental issues, encouraging positive environmental action, and regulation. In order to meet these responsibilities we employ a diverse workforce across our offices situated throughout Scotland.
Providing legal advice at both a regional and national level, you will have an important role in advising on operational matters, and on the practical implementation of legislation. You will provide legal advice in relation to environmental legislation and regulation, in particular on licensing and enforcement matters. You will provide legal advice and guidance in connection with the preparation of reports to the Procurator Fiscal and will be involved in the conduct of such cases as well as statutory appeals, judicial reviews and other court actions, providing vital support to the Regional Solicitor. As part of the legal team, this varied role will see you come into contact with diverse SEPA staff as well as a range of external legal professionals.
A qualified Solicitor, with a Diploma in Legal Practice and three years professional experience, you will possess excellent communications skills, from report writing to presentations. Ideally, though not essential, you will have practical experience of applying environmental legislation, and a knowledge of criminal procedure and evidence.
