Job Description

With significant growth and development plans across the Group, as well as the upcoming de-merger, the business is looking to enhance its legal team with the recruitment of an experienced Senior Legal Counsel.

Role Overview

Reporting to the Group Head of Legal, this individual will hold a senior role within the central legal team based in Edinburgh. Implementing the highest standards of legal work for the business, the Senior Legal Counsel will be required to safeguard Menzies’ reputation and provide pragmatic legal advice to both management and the global commercial teams on a range of issues.

Working closely with the Group Head of Legal on the roll out of key legal initiatives, the successful candidate will have their own operational workload and act as a key member of the legal team, displaying the highest degree of professional ethics and integrity at all times.  The role will also include the candidate providing coaching and mentoring for team members, with a view to potential line management responsibilities in future.  Previous experience in this area would therefore be advantageous.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide high quality legal advice focused on supporting the Group’s objectives.
  • Take a key role in ensuring strong corporate governance across the Group.
  • Lead the legal review and negotiation of complex documents, often cross-border and in collaboration with multiple parties.
  • Manage litigation or arbitration to ensure the Group’s interests are protected and properly represented.
  • Flag potential legal risks and provide mitigation strategies to enable decision makers to make informed and balanced decisions.
  • Prepare and give training on key legal topics affecting the Group.
  • Support departmental and business initiatives to reposition the legal team as a true business partner.

  • Excellent stakeholder management skills, with the personal integrity and gravitas to build positive relationships with multifaceted senior stakeholders.
  • Highly organised; able to prioritise multiple responsibilities and manage conflicting deadlines and demands.
  • Analytically astute, with the ability to understand how one issue may be part of a much larger system.
  • Has the ability to identify common themes across multiple issues and provide complementary solutions where available.
  • Combines excellent technical knowledge with a keen commercial focus and practical judgement.
  • Be adept in managing both legal requirements and strategic business management objectives.
  • Be a true team player, able to work with a variety of personalities and manage direct reports, peers and stakeholders.
  • Exceptional communication skills, both verbal and written; able to interact, collaborate and influence at every level both internally and externally.
