This is a rare and exciting opportunity to be part of an experienced and established team, guiding the OGA at a time of transition and further change for the oil and gas industry.
The Team has full responsibility and accountability for the provision of legal advice and support to the OGA on all aspects of its activities, as well as corporate governance and company secretarial matters.
The Team comprises the General Counsel, senior lawyers and the OGA’s Head of Governance. The main focus of this role will be to support the senior lawyers and General Counsel, in particular on the OGA’s oversight of offshore operational and licensing matters. The Legal Adviser’s line manager will be the General Counsel although on a day-to-day basis they will report directly to senior members of the Team.
There is therefore a significant commercial - and public - law dimension to the role.
We can offer a friendly and supportive environment, with a strong team of lawyers to support and guide you.
Detailed job description and key responsibilities
The Legal Adviser must be qualified to practise as a solicitor or advocate/barrister in Scotland and/or England & Wales.
This is a supporting role - the ‘junior’ to the ‘senior’ lawyers in the team - and you will therefore work closely with the senior lawyers in particular and with the operational, regulatory and policy teams in the OGA. You will be involved in advising on licensing and stewardship/compliance matters and assisting in the development and implementation of policy projects, guidelines and operational procedures.
You will also be responsible for providing ad hoc advice on commercial law, competition law, and on procedure for civil law sanctions as the powers of the OGA are further exercised.
As such, you will possess excellent written and oral communication and interpersonal skills with an ability to provide clear, constructive advice and drafting on complex legal issues, and the confidence and initiative to find workable solutions to policy and operational challenges. You will have the ability to work efficiently in a regulatory environment.
You may have experience of joint operating agreements/joint ventures and general upstream commercial agreements and UK petroleum licensing law – or you may have worked in a regulatory environment with experience of civil law procedure and appeals process.
