The post holder will
Assist the Director in the management of the office(s) for which responsibility is given and the direction, supervision, appraisal, assessment and training of staff; outreach work and collation of statistics in order to ensure that operational targets are achieved with maximum efficiency; OISC and Legal Quality Assurance standards are complied with. To act as deputy to, and where appropriate in substitution for the Director and to attend meetings as directed.
To undertake casework and manage a caseload to a level of competence/accreditation and to allocate casework to caseworkers to their level of competence/accreditation.
To assist clients as directed without discrimination as to race, colour, creed, age, sex, disability or prospects of success.
Management responsibility will include but not limited to;
Manage staff in the regional office(s) for which responsibility is given, including annual appraisals, casework supervisions and perform file reviews in accordance with OISC, Legal Aid Agency, IAS Office Manual and Legal Policy Guidelines requirements, on-going assessment and training, disciplinary and grievance procedures and all other line-management functions.
Collect and collate statistics for the offices on a monthly basis or as required by the Director. Ensure that such statistics are accurate and meet the deadlines for submission.
Act as first point of contact for legal queries from operational staff in the office building.
Review decisions taken by caseworkers in relation to their legal performance.
Actively promote and implement the IAS Equal Opportunities Policy.
To undertake casework and manage a caseload up to the necessary level of competence/accreditation.
Represent clients before immigration judges, in person or in writing as required, including preparation of cases.
Provide advice and representation to clients held at any Immigration Detention Centres or Prisons.
Interview and advise clients regarding immigration/asylum law, procedure, and practice. Provide guidance to clients on completion of documents.
Draft witness statements, skeleton arguments, representations and other complex documents and letters. Ensure all contact with the client is recorded on attendance notes on Lawfusion and all time spent is recorded as chargeable hours.
Maintain client confidentiality
Liaise with immigration authorities, other agencies, and groups as required.
Undertake outreach work as required by the Director, including liaising with ethnic communities, delivering talks and presentations to groups, and visiting other groups and centres as appropriate.
Keep up-to-date at all time with changes in immigration/asylum law by reading, attending training events and using the computer for reference purposes.
You should also have a commercial awareness and practical IT skills. It is essential that you have strong ethical standards, fantastic team spirit, but most importantly be humble and passionate about the work carried out.
